Argveti Archeological Expedition

The Argveti archaeological excavations are a new scientific project by LayerCo, launched in September 2025. Continuing the archaeological research tradition in the historical territory of Argveti is our priority.

The Argveti scientific archaeological project builds upon the work initiated years ago by the renowned archaeologist and historian, Professor Zurab Bragvadze. A key focus of the project is the archaeological study of Todadze Fortress slope in the Sachkhere municipality, which is also closely associated with Professor Bragvadze’s name.

In 2022, under Professor Bragvadze’s direction, the first archaeological surveys were carried out around Todadze Fortress. As a result, the southern slope revealed a multi-layered cultural sequence: an Early Bronze Age Kura-Araxes cultural layer, remains of a pre-classical wall, a Hellenistic and Late Antique necropolis, and an Early Medieval settlement. These discoveries made Todadze Fortress one of the most remarkable multi-layered archaeological sites in Upper Imereti.

The discovery and scientific study of the site mark an important step forward both in researching the archaeology of historical Argveti and in reconstructing the past of Eastern Colchis.

Unfortunately, Professor Zurab Bragvadze did not have the chance to complete the study of this monument during his lifetime. The significant scientific work he began will be continued by LayerCo starting in 2025.
